Dawse’s conversion

My mate Matt Dawson and Lilia were on It Takes Two on Wednesday night.

Their session showed how this programme does still have legs when the producers get it right.

Gone was the nanosecond soundbite interview, replaced with a more detailed look at Dawse’s conversion (oh yes, note my cunning rugby allusion) to being more expressive and to connecting with the music which led to a much improved performance. This was the best bit of last night’s show by a long way.

Close second was judge Craig previewing this Saturday’s dances – he was still wearing that dangerous tie he was sporting earlier in the week (this was, no doubt, a recorded sequence) but it was a good slot. This week we will be treated to more than two different dances – we will get the cha cha cha, the foxtrot, the tango and the rumba. This will bring some variety to the show but I wonder how the judges will deal with it. Comparisons between routines is going to be a lot more difficult.

So far so good for Wednesday’s It Takes Two. Unfortunately, we were also ‘treated’ to an appearance on the couch by the Sugababes, a group that does not loom large on my playlist. They tried to say something interesting about the dances and dancers but I was losing the will to live. Winkleman, whose shoes and leggings this week have helped her reach a new low of fashion sense, showed some top-quality interviewing technique with the following question: "Chemistry [between the dancers]. How important is it? It’s very important, isn’t it?"

The show ended with the Sugababes singing, if that’s what you want to call it.

This show should be about Strictly, it should not be an opportunity for bands to plug their songs. And it had been going so well…
